Defying the typical angst design process, the first conceptual sketch of the Dune House was the one that stuck. The architects drew a Surrealist crown floating on top of a Miesian glass box. And so it is. The house is one of five completed by Living Architecture, a nonprofit organization founded by writer Alain de Botton in 2010 (a sixth, by Peter Zumthor. This House approached the 2,690-square-foot concrete, steel, and wood house as a “mini-hotel” set into the dunes. Private spaces—four bedrooms, each with its own bath—are encased in the top floor’s wild gables, an exaggerated twist on the traditional holiday homes nearby. Public space on the ground floor surrounds a central core containing a staircase and fifth bedroom and bath. “We wanted to keep the social space as open as possible,” says Vigsnæs. Mission accomplished, with 360-degree views.

Hillside House Design Remodeling Integrates Sustainable Strategies

The project of Envisioned by studio Schola Architecture is a remodel of an old house located on a hillside and currently integrates sustainable strategies, such as solar orientation, deep overhangs, operable glass and the use of renewable building materials. It nestled into a steeply sloping 5,000-square foot site, the volumes step up the hillside to the rear of the existing home creating an ascending series of interior and exterior spaces, giving access to all levels of the property. This home conversion sited in Laguna Beach, in California, USA. The existing home creates the traditional base for the house, the new addition exploits the modular nature of post and beam connections. A monolithic concrete block mass anchors the addition; from which structure and glass pin wheel off creating ever dematerializing living spaces that open up to the views as one moves up through the home.

Challenging Project of Designing an Addition of Carport and Conference Space

The project of adding a carport with a conference space on top is faced challenges such as zoning laws, demands on the unusual mixture of uses, and technical limitations that arose from placing an addition so near the original structure. The villa’s existing structure and form were used to inform the aesthetics of the addition. Although the two were built some 30 years apart they blend together harmoniously. Carried on into the conference room space, the elegant timbers become the visual unifier between the exterior and interior. There is no denying that the addition is bold and visually striking. The warmth of the wood somewhat offsets the gregarious shape and daring lines. At night, light shines through the glazing (on top) and vertical timbers (on bottom), the structure exudes a kind of warmth and unpretentious elegance that is so refreshing in a mostly-utilitarian space.

This is the Beam House, a contemporary residence located in Arbel, in northern Israel. It’s a very impressive structure both by its size and overall design. The house was a project by Tel Aviv-based studio Uri Cohen Architects. It was completed in 2010 and it covers an area of 1,930 square feet. It’s a contemporary structure that was requested by a client who wanted to build his house next to already existing farm. He wanted this home to follow the traditional pattern but in its own modern way. The first thing that catches someone’s attention when looking at the whole complex is the beautifully curvature of one of the volumes and the way all these apparently separate structure combine to form a beautiful composition. The architects came up with a design that combines some of the features typical to the agriculture buildings from the area with the beams of a country home, all this with a contemporary twist.

The corrugated metal skin is cut away in places, revealing some but not all of the windows of each building and providing glimpses of the brightly colored walls behind. Located in Qingpu in the west of the city, the center comprises a grid of rectilinear buildings that are connected to one another by a series of bridges, terraces and enclosed walkways. The largest of the fourteen buildings has white-rendered walls and encloses an open-air courtyard, while the others house classrooms, dance studios, a library, a gallery, offices and a theater auditorium. As we understand the nature of Teenager’s Center, the whole program was divided into a serial of small individual functional spaces which was utilized by various types of open spaces such as courtyard, plaza and lane. Whole theme is based on such idea: on the premise of adapting adjacent urban scale, a small inner public space of human scale will be created in order to reconstruct the memory of traditional town scape scale.

According to the architect, “The resultant massing reveals an imperfect, rough-hewn form recalling the natural isometric formation of mineral rock salt.” Minimalist interiors really let the home’s unusual shape do all the talking, putting the spotlight on its plan that includes soaring two-storey living spaces, lined with overhead hallways and lofts, and glass-enclosed staircases zigzagging their way up and making a cool, clean addition to the home’s modern aesthetic. This innovative house falls in line with this multi-award-winning firm’s forward-thinking architecture, which breaks convention and tends to march to its own drum, so to speak, such as the similarly styled inner courtyard house and the meditation house, among others.

The floating wooden boathouse is lined with clear stained red cedar, which gives the building an irresistible charm. On the lower deck, you can see an exterior staircase that connects the two levels of the floating wooden boathouse. The floating wooden boathouse offers plenty of free space that is determined with the maximum simple contours. The plenty of natural light creates a wonderful mood in the interior. This Tokyo house is an extremely narrow gable-profiled structure. This unique house design is a fine steel structure which looks very light and tender. It seems like a thin sheet of paper standing there, adjacent to normal homes, and if it would get a bit windy it might just blow away. Moreover, most of the living space of the owners is located below, since it was possible to actually use more floor area underground, than it was possible to use above ground. The interior space above ground has rather much light, because it penetrates through the “skin” of the facades and through the perforated metal floors inside. By just looking at the picture we couldn’t have guessed that the building has got a rather developed underground story. The house has its “roots”. Every architect dreams of such clients as the owners of this unique house design. Open for, perhaps even seeking, bold artistic and technical decisions, not afraid of the difficulties.

The Lago Vista Guest House is a contemporary retreat built for a private client. The house is located in Los Angeles, United States. It was designed by Aleks Istanbullu Architects and it has a very light and simple look. The exterior design of the building is sculptural and, despite its contemporary feel and very clean shape, it integrates nicely into the landscape. It’s like a bold detail in the middle of the already spectacular landscape. As for the actual structure of the property, the house is divided into two distinct volumes. The rooms are spacious and functionally structures. The lower level includes the guest rooms while the other volume includes the library and other similar spaces. This would be the retreat cube. Another great element are the views that can be admired from all the rooms of the house. They make this place complete.
